Ghadab 2 (Anger)

When we develop a survey instrument to find out certain things, we would have two extremes on a scale. If on one end of the scale is agree, then the other end would be agree to not agree (Ha ha..). If its love on one end, on the other end it must be not to love therefore - equivalent to dislike or hate, wouldn't it?

The question is why hate? It stems from the a negative feeling of love i.e. anger (ghadab). What exactly does trigger anger? There's hasad/jealousy, hatred, love for fitnah, dissatifaction, regrets and not being thankful to Allah. Series of the mazmumah characteristics lumped into one.

Why hasad (dengki, irihati)? It's a disease of the heart, the soul and mind. When one sees another who are better off than him or her, he feels angry, the fact that he/she has less. In general, the person simply cannot stand seeing another person happy. May it be because the person has more in terms of wealth, or the person is surrounded by people who loves him/her.

More often anger is aimed at a person, sometimes we feel angry at society, at our leaders or sometimes when we lose all hope we may even feel angry at Allah (Nauzubillah). Thus anger can be at anything or anyone and the anger will turn to hate to the person you are angry at, eventually.

This feeling of anger has to be managed, remember the story 'Anger Management'. However in Islam how do we go about it? In my mind as simply as it can get begin with a lot of zikir. That can be done not only after performing prayers, it can be done at anytime, anywhere. To me it's similar to taking care of the roots to everything. It is also to get closer to Allah such that we strenghten our relationship with Allah to eventually say ' innasolati wanusuki wamayahya wamamati Lillahi Taala'.

Don't get angry, think simply;
  • the things you have and lost, it was lent to you;
  • the things you can't have, because it's not yours;
  • if you have worked hard and still not get what you want, it's because Allah knows at that moment in time it is not the right time to give you whatever that you want;

Just don't get angry when things don't come the way you want them or if other people have more than you. Be thankful with what God has given but no harm in trying harder though. There will come a time when people say bad things to you in your face, you would just istighfar and not give him a punch in the face. It happened to me and all I felt was not anger but sympathy for that human being for his hatred for me.

I still have many weaknesses and a few of them includes getting angry at cashiers who never say thank you and people who still never learn about queueing. So help me God.
